Journal Four

In Chapter 11 Kozol portrays how the economy and how we already view the children is affecting the every day lives of children in poorer areas. I believe this is one of the most important aspects in Chapter 11, titled "The Details of Life." Kozol displays the realistic view of helping the poor and many peoples view on it when is comes to the economy. He explains that some of the public believe we need a "justifiable" reason to spend money on children of poor people. In addition too Kozol explains how children are not brought up in certain business situations but some believe that we should invest in them now. I believe this too be important because we need to invest in the children of the future. In addition too it affects the children because if we do not invest in trying to give are children the best then they will have less opportunities. Kozol mentions "Why not give these kids the best we have because we are a wealthy nation and they're children and deserve to have some fun while they're still less than four feet high(138)?" I believe Kozol is right that we should use the resources that we have to help the children and let them enjoy being young. The economy and how we view the children affects their everyday lives because they will have a certain attitude on how they should be seeing their future. If we do not believe in the children now than they will not think of themselves as anything but an "entry level" worker. I agree with Kozol that we should see the children as what they are now and not what we think they will be in the future. It affects the children because we are putting things into their minds before they even get a chance to figure out how they want to live out their life. It also makes them think they can only accomplish so much when they are in the poorer areas.
